2nd Google Sketch Up, With Stairs

My model was based on this sketch below.

The first set of stairs are part of the external slope of the structure. They are 1 meter high, hence you have to "climb" them like the word suggests. They are randomly placed like in rock climbing, where you have to move from side to side before you can ascend. I have placed a sandstone material on them, so they feel like rock climbing.

The second set of stairs is for Death. They are on a slope down, so that when somebody is walking down them, they will feel like they will fall forward to their death. They are also glass so that the person can see that if they slip, they have a long way to fall. They are held together by chains, much like a prisoner. These people usually feel like they are dead. There is no support on the sides, so the stairs will move from side to side when stepped on. There is also no balustrade making the person feel like they are going to die.

19 Sketches

My fist set of sketches were very basic and do not show much design inspiration. They are also very literal in the sense that CLIMBING involves ladders and that there are bones in the SKELETON. In the space itself, you wouldn’t feel a sense a climbing.

The DEATH space has many sharp edges, making the space feel like it will fall down and the sharp edges will kill you. The LOVE space has many circles to indicate that love is continuous. This space however doesn’t allow for the artist to feel loved.

The second set of images use alot of sharp edges. The main problem with both DEATH and BEAST is that they are not above the datum, but rather the datum has been moved. I wanted the two spaces to work together and at the time I thought this was the best way, however it does not conform to the guidelines.

The DEATH space has alot of cliffs, as I live on the coast and hence hear about alot of deaths of people jumping off the cliffs. The DISGUSTING space has all different sizes and heights, with no real consideration to the artist inside, hence making the space feel disgusting to the artist. The WAVY is very basic and not much thought put into it, and the BEAST was disfigured shapes.

The first set of drawings is very literal. It wasn’t until the second part of SKELETON that I started to think outside the box. I thought that the skeleton is a hierarchy of bones, from big bones to small bones in the body, hence created big and small work spaces.

The CLIMBING draw is still too literal for my liking. I have gone back inside the comfort box and stuck to the simple, which doesn’t look good. The DEATH is a place where it looks like a bomb has exploded; making the artist feel like the ground beneath him could explode.

I became fascinated by the idea of the BEAMS in 3D. This drawing has more beams, but now they aren’t as steep, allowing for more work spaces. The wavy incorporates the random nature of the sea.

The above set of drawing are now working very well, since I have now left my comfort zone and am thinking outside the box. The CLIMBING is a series of odd shapes, that involve alot of climbing. The DEATH space includes a large pit, to make the people feel like they are at the bottom of the earth. Each of the spaces are also small like a morgue.

The BEAMS are very literal, however in 3D they would create a very interesting shape. The SKELETON comes from the previous hierarchal thought, however its symmetrical like the bones in our body.

The LOVE concept uses a set of semi circles that interlink. This interlinking shows taht there is a strong connection in love. Although they are not fully circular, they still suggest the concept of endless love with the ring. The SKELETON drawing is the same as above, hence why I have redone this and is included in sketch 19.

The CLIMBING is also the same, hence is redone in sketch 19. The WAVY took the concept of the surfing wave, and a sailing boat, and tried to work these into the design. I noticed that this was still too literal when I finished.

The SKELETON uses the idea that all bones are different lengths and thicknesses, hence have created different spaces using this concept. The LOVE is a series of interlocking circles for the reason already outlined.

The BEAMS again is literal, however this time i tried to create multiple work spaces within the beams themselves, however this design failed. The LOVE is like above, however this time is only two circles, as love is usually a thing between two people.

The CLIMBING space has been redone below. The DISGUSTING space is a series of boxes and circles, however the artist wouldn’t feel disgusted, hence this design failed.

The DEATH is meant to resemble being in the heavens. The blocks have been positioned so that the artist cant see down, hence feels like they are in the heavens. This wouldn’t work in 3D. The BEAMS are a series of underground shafts, which look like beams. This design was too basic and didn’t work for me.

The WAVY uses spaces in the shape of sails, which are used on boats that go into waves. This was thinking about the relationship between the word and different objects. The DEATH uses many pits, and only a few number of very small rooms to make the artist feel so isolated, alot like they have died.

The LOVE is again interlinking circles for the same reasons, jsut a different design. The DISGUSTING is again a very odd shaped area, however this doesn’t quite work. I found this word a very difficult one to work with.
